In this introduction, each portion of the Angelic, or Enochian system contained in Liber 1250 will be examined individually to explain the terminology and abbreviations used throughout. It is hoped that Liber 1250 will become an invaluable guide to the study and practice of Enochian gematria.

THE ALPHABET

The Angelic or "Enochian" alphabet was delivered to Dee and Kelley in a vision on May 6, 1583. The letters appeared on a sheet of paper, and Kelley drew their shapes in outline with ink.
"...It is to be Noted, that, when E.K. could not aptly imitate the forme of the Characters, or letters, as they were shewed: that they appeared drawn on his paper with a light yellow cullor, which he drew the blak uppon, and so the yellow cullor disappearing, there remayned onely the shape of the letter in blak..."
Of the primal, evocative power of this alphabet and language the Angels say: "In this language, every letter signifieth the member of the substance whereof it speaketh. Every word signifieth the essence of the substance. The letters are separated, and in confusion: and therefore, are by numbers gathered together, which also signify a number. For as every greater containeth his lesser, so are secret and unknown forms of things knit up in their parents. Being known in number, they are easily distinguished, so that herein we teach places to be numbered, letters to be elected from the numbered, and proper words from the letters, which signify substantially the thing that is spoken of in the center of the Creator."
The alphabet was grouped into three sets of seven letters for a total of twenty-one. Each letter also has a particular name and numerical value. Like Hebrew, one of their parent models, they should be read from right to left. These letters and their names are:
The first seven: Pa, Veh, Ged, Gal, Or, Vn, Graph

The third seven: Pal, Med, Don, Ceph, Van, Fam, Gisg

                    

Dee, well educated in both Greek and Hebrew, constructed his "Enochian Qaballah" upon these models. Two forms of numbering systems were used by Dee, digital and additional. The digital system reduced the numbers to their basic power.

SIGILLUM DEI AEMETH


Dee was first told to draw a circle and divide it into four equal parts, then divide each of those parts into ten. Each part contains a letter/number combination, or simply a letter. Following the rule of reading to the right if the number is over a letter, or reading to the left if a number is under a letter, the Angels delivered two sets of hierarchical names.
The first set is the names of the Supreme Elemental Kings.These are:
1) Air-Thaolog
2) Fire-OhoooHAtn
3) Water-ThhbybAatnn
4 )Earth-ThhAaoth
These will be found listed as in the following example:

Seven sigils were given to represent these names and were written between the outer ring and the first heptagon.



This square was delivered on March 20, 1582. Reading across, seven sacred names of God are given. This will be called Ameth square 1.
These names were written in the outer heptagon reading clockwise from the top.

Reading downward from the top left, the names of seven Archangels are also found. As these are Hebrew names, they will not be listed here.


This square was delivered on March 21, 1582. Reading across, a further seven names are obtained. The Angels say of these names: "the seven names proceed from the left to the right are the names of God not known to the Angels; neither can be spoken or read by man." This will be called Ameth square 2.
These names were written just inside the outer heptagon.

A further seven Archangels can be found concealed in this square. They are found by reading diagonally from the top left to the bottom right. As these are also Hebrew names, they will not be listed here.

The second Ameth square yields four more sets of seven names. The Angels say of this: "These names bring forth seven Angels: the governors of the heavens next to us. Every letter of the Angel's name bringeth forth seven daughters; every daughter bringeth forth her daughter; every daughter her daughter bringeth forth a son; every son hath his son."
Each set of names consists of from one to seven letters and follow the planetary order of: Sol, Luna, Venus, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Saturn.

1) The seven daughters are called "Filias Bonitatis". They are found by reading diagonally from the top right. They are written inside the points of the interlocking heptagram. They will be abbreviated as FB.

ANGELORUM BONORUM 49

1) The Angels of the Heptarchy

This Tablet contains seven sections, each containing seven Angelic names:
One King, abbreviated as K
One Prince, abbreviated as P, and
Five remaining Angels.
Each Angel will be given a number from 1-49, the order in which they appear in the Table.
Each section is given a planetary attribution. This planet rules the entire day. This is the first planet.
Each Angel of that day has its own individual planetary attribution in the order of Venus, Sol, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, Saturn, Luna, beginning with the planet that rules the day. This is the second planet.
This will be shown more clearly from the following examples:

2)The Ministers of the Princes

Each Prince has six attendant Ministers, each of seven letters and capable of permutation into seven forms (ABCDEFG, BCDEFGA, CDEFGAB, etc.). Here are examples of how the Ministers are listed:

BNAGOLE is the seventh and last of this first seven of this first Table: accounted the first. The second seven by like order is gathered of BABALEL, and the rest of his septenary. And so forth, to the end downward, etc."

"3.4: In the third, begin at the last letter (of the latter word) of the last of the second seven: and so upward, toward the left hand."
DEE: The last word of the second seven is BNAGOLE: the last letter thereof is E: which is the first of this third Table: and the I, in BRISFLI, is the second, and the L in BRANGLO the third, and then so forth, upward, overward toward the left hand, etc.

"4.5: For the fourth, look BOBOGEL. Then look to this fourth Table the first B is the first B of BOBOGEL. The second B of this Table, is the B of BEFAFES. The third letter is A, the second letter of BASMELO. The fourth letter, R, is the third of BERNOLE. The fifth is the fourth of BRANGLO. The sixth, is the fifth of BRISFLI. The seventh is the sixth of BNAGOLE. And so on to the next seven downward orderly for the rest of the Table."

"6.7: In the sixth, (the infernal Table), the first is B of BOBOGEL, the second is A of the 15th: the third is N of the 22nd: the fourth, is the fourth of 29: the fifth of the 36th: the sixth of the 43rd: and the seventh of 49: being E in BAMNODE, two letters being taken of that last septenary. The second septenary beginneth at the first of the 15th, the second the second of the 22 (being Y), the third at the third of the 29, then the fourth of the 36th, the fifth of the 43rd, etc."

LIBER SCIENTIÆ AUXILII ET VICTORIÆ TERRESTRIS

The Book of Earthly Knowledge, Aid & Victory contains the names of three important groups. These are the 30 Ayres, the 91 Governors of the Ayres, and the 12 Angelic Kings.

1)The 30 Ayres

The 30 Ayres are the realms of spiritual experience that surround our physical globe. Each Ayre contains three Governors, except for the 30th, TEX, which contains four.

The 12 Angelic Kings each rule a specific directional position and oversee (technically supercede) the 12 Tribes of Israel.

THE GREAT TABLE

The original Great Table, as delivered to Dee and Kelley on June 25, 1584, is the version used throughout Liber 1250. The Great Table, or the Table of the Watchtowers, is a complex arrangement containing many sub-systems of hierarchies.

1) The Black Cross
This divides the Great Table into four equal portions, or quarters, of east (upper left), south (upper right), west (lower right), and north (lower left). The Black Cross contains four names:
a) EXARP
b) HCOMA
c) NANTA
d) BITOM

Each of the four quarters of the Great Table are identical in structure, as shown by the diagram below.

Their functions are, however, different in that they effect separate regions of the physical universe. Each quarter will be divided in the following manner.

2) Linea Spiritus Sancti

The line of the Holy Spirit divides each quarter in half horizontally. It contains a name of 3, 4 and 5 letters. These are:
a) east-ORO IBAH AOZPI
b) south-MOR DIAL HCTGA
c) west-MPH ARSL GAIOL
d) north-OIP TEAA PDOCE
It will be abbreviated as LSS.

3)The Numen Divinum or divine presence

This name forms a whirl around the central squares of each quarter. There are two forms of each name. The Angels tell Dee when speaking of the eastern quarter: "Put the A or the h that stand in the Center, to it: Thou hast Bataiva or Bataivh. YOU MUST TAKE BUT ONE OF THEM, either the A or the h. A, comiter, and h in extremis Judiciis."

4) The 24 Seniors

The Seniors are formed from the Linea Spiritus Sancti and the two lines that divide each quarter in half vertically, called Linea Patre & Filio descendens. There are six Seniors in each quarter. Seniors 1 and 4 may be spelled with either six or seven letters. The Angels tell Dee: "If you will make them of seven letters (because two of them, are but of six) that is, when the wrath of God is to be increased." Each Senior is associated with one of six planets. Sol is referred to the numen divinum.

5)The Crosse Transversary or Calvary Cross

The Calvary Cross contains two names, one of five letters (horizontal) and one of six letters (vertical). They will be abbreviated as CC. They further divide each quarter into four lesser sections. Each Cross has a different function depending on which sub-quarter they are found in.
a) Those of the eastern sub-quarter are called the Angels of Medicine. They will be abbreviated as M.
b) Those of the southern sub-quarter are called the Angels of Precious Stones. They will be abbreviated as PS.
c) Those of the western sub-quarter are called the Angels of the Four Elements. They will be abbreviated as FE.
d) Those of the northern sub-quarter are called the Angels of Transformation. They will be abbreviated as T.

6)The Dispositors

The Dispositors are formed from the four letters over each Calvary Cross. They are capable of permutation into four forms (ABCD, BCDA, CDAB, DABC). These will also perform a different function depending on which sub-quarter they are located in. The Dispositors will be abbreviated as Dis.
a) Those of the eastern sub-quarter are called the Angels of Natural Substances. They will be abbreviated as NS.
b) Those of the southern sub-quarter are called the Angels of Transportation. They will be abbreviated as Trans.
c) Those of the western sub-quarter are called the Angels of Secret Discovery. They will be abbreviated as SD.
d) Those of the northern sub-quarter are called the Angels of Mechanical Arts. They will be abbreviated as MA.

7)The Rulers

The Rulers are formed by prefixing the letter from the Black Cross that stands in that particular line. Those of the eastern and southern sub-quarters will be prefixed by either E or H. Those of the western and northern sub-quarters will be prefixed by either A or P.

8)The "Lesser Angels"

These are the names found under the arms of the Calvary Crosses, contained in four rows, or lines. They will use the same naming as the Crosses themselves (Angels of Medicine, Angels of the Four Elements, etc.). The lines follow the ordering of:
a) line 1-AIR
b) line 2-WATER
c) line 3-EARTH
d) line 4-FIRE
These names are usually composed of four letters, but may also be formed of five when extra potency is desired. When speaking of the Angels of Medicine, the Angels tell Dee of this: "If it be an incurable disease (in the judgement of man) then adde the letter that standeth against the name, and make him up five: then he cureth miraculously." These names of five letters will include the abbreviation incr.

THE ROUND TABLET OF NALVAGE

The Tablet of Nalvage contains the names of important Angelic hierarchies and many words of power. Around the outside are found the names of four great Angelic choirs:
a) VRCH-Confundantes (those who confound)
b) LVAS-Laudantes (those who praise)
c) LANG-Ministrantes(those who minister)
d) SACH-Confirmantes (those who confirm)
The remaining 36 squares can be divided into four quarters, each containing three words of power that combine to make a sentence.

49 CLAVES ANGELICÆ, THE ENOCHIAN KEYS (OR CALLS)

The Enochian Keys, or Calls were dictated letter by letter backwards by the Angel Nalvage. These calls contain words that make up the bulk of Liber 1250. Their usage is defined by Nalvage:
"In these keys which we deliver, are the mysteries and secret beings and effects of all things moving, and moved within the world. These calls touch all parts of the World...These calls are the keys into the Gates and Cities of wisdom, which cannot be opened, but with visible apparition... These are the holy and mystical Calls delivered, which followeth in practice for the moving of the Tables that control the Kings and Ministers of government...In this is the life of MOTION, in whom all tongues of the world are moved..."
There are nineteen Keys given by the Angels. The nineteenth Call permits access to the 30 Ayres. These are invoked by inserting the name of one of the thirty Ayres into the beginning of the text, for a total of 48 Calls. Nalvage says of this:
"We instruct and inform you, according to this Doctrine delivered, that which is contained in the 49 Tables. In 49 voyces, or callings, which are the Natural Keys to open those (not 49 but 48, for One is not to be opened) Gates of understanding." This One unspoken Call is beyond all human comprehension: "for there is neither speech nor silence that was or shall be to the end of the world."
